Meet John: Environmental Engineer

University: PhD student, University of Washington in Seattle, WA

Dissertation Research: John’s research focuses on analyzing the population dynamics of marine herring populations. He specifically develop new and improve existing mathematical models for estimating fish abundance among other numeric outputs used to assess the sustainability of herring populations. These estimates are used by management agencies (state and federal governments, as well as international commissions) to set regulations on industrial and recreational fishing. John’s work is also used to explore global trends in herring abundance and ecological interactions with other fish, marine mammals, seabirds, and the physical environment.

Something cool: John was recently selected as a 2017 Bonderman Fellow at the University of Washington that funds a select group of students to travel solo around the world!
