Michigan Tech Ranked Among Top Universities in the World

In a just-released ranking of world universities, Michigan Tech is ranked among the top 11 percent worldwide. QS World University Rankings considered 4,322 universities in its latest rankings. The rankings are based on six measures, including two large annual surveys, one of active academics and one of employers. This year, 74,651 academics and 37,781 recruiters around the world were surveyed. Other yardsticks include the ratio of faculty members to students, the percentage of international faculty and students and citations per faculty member. QS Top Universities in the World ranks schools by increments of 50 points. In the 2016-17 rankings just released. Michigan Tech scored 501-550. The University has moved up 50 points since it was first ranked by this organization in 2013. "Our citations have gone way up," said Provost Jackie Huntoon. "As citations continue to increase, I predict that our reputation will rise as well."According to the QS World University Rankings web site, "the ranking displays clear national trends that suggest that the United States is pulling away from its nearest rivals, while the UK, Australia and some Continental European countries lose ground." Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tops the ranking for the fifth year in a row and, for the first time since the inaugural rankings of 2004/5, the three leading universities are all American: MIT, Stanford and Harvard. More than half of the top 20 universities are from the US.
